WILDLIFE FRIENDLY GARDENS
- Plant pollinator-friendly flowering plants like the Lavender, Geranium and St John’s Wort in the picture above. Include a variety of flowers so there is something blooming spring, summer and autumn, and have evening scented flowers like honeysuckle for moths.
- Plant shrubs and trees which have fruits for birds to eat in the autumn and winter, eg hawthorn, firethorn and crab apple.
- Include a variety of bushes and climbers, to provide hiding places for birds and insects.
- Leave a few “untidy” places, with ground cover plants, piles of stones and twigs.
- Make a pond for birds to drink from and bathe in. Could be a bird bath or a container like an old sink or barrel. Make sure there is a slope so animals can get in or out.
- Create Hedgehog Highways, so animals can walk under the fence to neighbouring gardens.
- Avoid pesticides.
